The Village of Johnstown has a small town atmosphere offering a variety of activities. Johnstown is a mostly retail and industrial working community with growing opportunities in employment, housing, and recreation. Six golf courses are in the Johnstown area and more are being built. From bingo and euchre to tennis and aerobics, Johnstown's Recreation Center offers a wide range of activities for all ages. For outdoor exercise, a 30-mile paved bike path connects Johnstown to Newark, the county seat of Licking County.

Johnstown's town square, designed in the 19th century, is surrounded with family-owned restaurants, retail stores, a coffeehouse, and an ice cream shop. Its weekly newspaper, The Johnstown Independent, has been in circulation since 1884.
